Aerolaser participates in the 2023 Summer Campaing of E-distribución (Endesa) by inspecting power lines

31 of May of 2023

  • E-distribución, Endesa's network subsidiary, will invest 58.3 million euros this year with the dual aim of protecting the forests that surround the power lines and guaranteeing the quality and continuity of the electricity supply

  • This campaign has three axes: selective cutting and pruning, powerline inspections - in which Aerolaser is involved - and network improvements

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of vegetation catching fire. As every year, Endesa takes advantage of the summer season to keep its installations in optimum condition and minimise the risk of incidents.

The communities where the power lines are subject to inspection and evaluation are Catalonia, Andalusia, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Aragon and Badajoz. The company carries out these actions continuously and periodically, with a total of 318,000 kilometres of power lines.

Aerolaser System has been involved in this campaign for many years through its inspection services using its own technology: LiDAR, termographic cameras and high resolution video.

Flight operators carry out the inspection in the helicopter, where they monitor and ensure that the data collection is working well. The two Aerolaser operators flying with the pilot over the power lines perform different tasks to achieve the mission objectives. One of them controls the Trakka –an external device that has a termographic camera and a visual camera – an external device equipped with a termographic camera and a visual camera – to search for hot spots along the power grid; while the other monitors and controls the AeSystem – our sensor device integrated with a LiDAR sensor and two cameras of 150 mpx each - from the helicopter with AeMission, the flight management software, to ensure that the data is being collected correctly.

Our production team then carefully analyses the data collected to detect and report any anomalies in the power lines. This allows Endesa to order cutting and pruning in areas where there is a risk of contact between vegetation and the distribution network, and to carry out maintenance where there are hot spots or faults.

One of Aerolaser's strengths in Powerline Inspection is its commitment to projects and the optimisation and knowledge of the equipment. Integrating all phases of innovation, development, manufacturing and service support is an advantage to solve possible failures or give feedback to increase the product quality. This helps the inspection process to develop perfect, prepared and competent equipment for the global market.
